There’s no magic trick to getting visitors to your website, but there are some basic fundamentals and also some methods of promotion that are often overlooked.
First, ensure that your site is going to be of value to those who visit it. Make sure it’s fast loading for users, that your design holds-up on all of the most popular browsers and most importantly, that your content both serves a real purpose to visitors and is presented in an easy and pleasing manner.
Once you’ve done all that you’re ready to promote your site. But where?
There’s no lack of advertising opportunities out there. You can get text and graphic advertising just about anywhere online for the right price. But what if you’re on a tight budget?
Creativity is key. Find ways to Cross-Promote with related sites. Link and Banner exchanges can be great for this.
Here’s an often overlooked idea for web site promotions: offline marketing! That’s right, you can (and should) promote your web site offline. Fliers, business cards, mailings, give away pens and pencils with your web address on them. Find ways that you can reach your target market with offline promotions, it really works.
A friend of mine has a site that sells sports shoes, we were talking one day about ways he could promote his site offline and he decided to have colored shoe-laces with his web address sewn in made and then passed them around at several local schools.
The results were amazing. His daily traffic improved by over 600% and his sales more than quadrupled for the next 2 months. Now he does this same thing every semester (to catch each new crop of students) and it never fails to achieve similar results.
Another person I know has a lingerie store online. She did a similar thing by having her site address printed onto bikini bottoms that she gives out to dancers at local clubs that offer erotic dancing entertainment. These dancers wear several lingerie-related outfits per night as they perform so she figured at least some would buy from her.
What she hadn’t figured on was a large number of the dancers have become affiliate sellers for her (she offers an affiliate program on her site) and now bring in tons of sales each month on their own.
The point here is that there are gold-mines out there in offline marketing. Just be creative when looking for opportunities and you’ll find some unique ways to reach your target market and make an impression.
