Don’t Build a Web Site, Build a Web Style

The number one reason I hear from people who want to try running their own web site(s) but hold back from taking the plunge is, “I can’t build a web site, I don’t know anything about code or programming”. Guess what?–Neither do most people who run web sites.

The really great news–if you’re one of the people hesitating from diving in–is that there are scripts and software programs available absolutely free that remove you completely from the programming work. Using one of them is usually just a matter of selecting the options you prefer, and often as simple as writing an email when it comes to adding your content.

For anyone who has been hesitant I say create your own web style, not site. If you use a CMS (content management system) or some form of Blog software (like this site does) then the technical mechanics of developing your site are already done for you. That’s everything you need from the scripting/programming standpoint, unless your goal is to be a coder or programmer on the web.

Using one of these programs not only means having the technical aspects taken care of for you, but that you will have more time to focus on the actual goal of your site, whether it is providing information, closing sales or some combination of the two as well.

My point is, don’t be scared or intimidated by the idea of building a web site (which can sound overwhelming if you have no experience), because there’s plenty of high quality, free software available already that will build the “site” for you, leaving you to focus on building the style that’s going to ultimately help accomplish your goals for the site.

The style is just the content (information, images and etc.) that you’re going to place on your site, and how it will be displayed to your visitors.

If you approach the creation of a site from this perspective it may help ease your mind a bit. I wish you all the best with it, and will try to make my next post helpful on how to style an effective web site based on your goals for it.
