This really isn’t a “part 2″ so much as a follow up to my original Finding Your Niche – An Absolute Must posting because quite a few people have asked for more help on identifying good niches.
I’m going to be completely honest here and say that for me it’s usually a game of “poke and hope”. By that I mean I use my basic understanding of what people want, combined with what seems to be popular–or rising in popularity–online; and if it’s a topic I can develop comprehensive content for I’ll give it a try. Then it’s just a matter of watching traffic and revenue results, recognizing what’s working and what’s not–and tweaking to infinity.
I think with a little observation and deductive reasoning anyone can identify a good niche for themselves, but if you’re really stuck I found an page titled 100 Niche Money Making Ideas over at MainSearches that you can use for inspiration.
My best advice if you use something from there, would be to try and narrow your niche even further than what is suggested. For example, an obvious topic of interest to a lot of people is “Working From Home”, and it is number 6 on the page I just mentioned. I would narrow that a little more though, to a specific type of working from home, such as “working from home online”, or “working from home screen printing”, or “desktop publishing from home”–the idea is to NOT try to be all things to all people. A good niche is both narrow in focus AND wide in popularity.
