Last night was a bust! What should have been a fun date-night turned into a six hour fight with my girl’s infected computer that ultimately ended with us having to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system for her.
I’ve said it before here but it is worth repeating, protect your computer and the data you have on it before connecting to the Internet or you are a catastrophe waiting to happen!
Another good point is to know what protection software you’re using and how well it works. My girl had all kinds of free anti-virus, anti-spyware/adware and even a free firewall running on her system and she still got zapped. I’m not knocking the free programs out there, most seem to do a fair job (and that’s great for the price), but they understandably don’t seem to stay as current with the latest threats as commercial programs do.
In this case I believe it was spyware that got past her defenses and made a mess of some critical system files that left the computer unusable.
This probably all could have been avoided if she’d listened to me months ago and gone with a commercial protection program. One of my favorites out there is Webroot’s Spy Sweeper. The last I saw it was like $30 a year for the license, and it provides full and comprehensive protection, and even removal capabilities for common and advanced threats, like spyware that tries hiding using rootkit technology.
Spy Sweeper also has a built-in automatic defense update feature that keeps it ahead of the latest threats to your computer and information without you having to worry about it. How much easier could it be to protect yourself? Just install it and forget about it.

This is one war that is never going to end and you can count on that and I think this is because there are so many people out there who does not want it to end.
