Successful At Home Business

I’m curious how other people define a successful at home business, or any business for that matter. I was talking with a friend yesterday about this, and his basic idea was “when the owner has earned a million dollars in gross profits” the business is a success.
I don’t know if others would agree with that, but I sure don’t. Maybe its my upbringing, or my past work experiences or whatever, but in my mind there’s a lot more to the definition of success than just the financial profits. To me, when you start a new business its a lot like having a baby. You’re bringing a new entity into the community. You’ll want it to grow up and be financially secure, but you also want it to have good character and a strong sense of right and wrong. It should be productive, and give as well as take from the community.
Heck, if profits was all it took to be a success then everybody could launch a successful at home business. Just decide on some undervalued and overpriced crap to sell, setup a small business web site full of inflated promises, do a little search marketing and watch the profits roll in. People do this everyday. The problem is, they don’t stay in business very long, because consumers get wise to them, they realize the business is taking them for a ride and the bottom falls out for the owner.
The ones who stick around, who enjoy true success over the long haul, are the ones who understand that their success and their business are defined by more than the dollars earned. By acknowledging that they make business choices from a better perspective, which ultimately leads to more dollars earned, and so on with a snowball effect.
I think it ultimately comes down to dollars earned versus dollars taken. If you take your customer’s money, you’ll soon have no customers. But, if you earn your customer’s money, you’ll also gain their respect.

When I started my home business, yes I want the money, but I really want the freedom. I love getting up every day, and make my own decisions. I just started my business so I am far from rich. Of course I would love to make lots of money. The freedom is great no one tells me what to do, even though my wife thinks she can lol. Bad traffic and snowy days, don’t have to deal with at all. Have a good day!
