More on Social Marketing

I usually try not to spend time online at all on Sundays. It’s my day for family and relaxation time, but since I have the house to myself for a little while I decided to check on some stats and post a quick little blurb here about a new report I released for free yesterday that might be of interest to my blog readers.

I talk a lot here about using the social web in my marketing efforts. In-fact my last posting was about how Chrissy and I generated over $10,000 in Halloween sales for one site with just .

Whenever I post about social marketing I always get lots of questions. The main one being “isn’t social marketing just another form of spam?”

My answer is always “NO!” And then I expand on that to include that it can be spam if approached in a sleazy or underhanded manner. But the very nature of social networks prevents those who use such tactics from really doing well with them anyway–human peer review is equally powerful and dangerous for marketer’s depending on their use of the services–which is what makes social marketing so useful for someone who respects the platforms and acts with integrity.

Another question that I get a lot is “how exactly do you make the most of your social marketing?”

That’s a harder one to answer because there are a ton of variables like what are you trying to accomplish? Where does what you’re doing fit in? And so on.

Every time I get that question I wish I had a better and more thorough answer for people prepared, so yesterday I sat down to write a blog posting which would really go deep into outlining my thoughts and approaches to responsible marketing with the social web that have been effective for me.

Unfortunately, by the time I was done writing it I had created something I felt was too big for a single blog post (and I’m known to be long winded on this blog), so I turned it into a PDF file, gave it a snazzy little title and released it for free at www.nichefrenzy.com.

If you’re using or interested in using social marketing in any way please feel free to grab a copy… and I’m always happy to hear what others think so all comments (good or bad) are welcomed.

I’m pretty happy with the initial results. I released the report yesterday evening after dinner and already its been downloaded by over 280 people, and a few have already contacted me to say they like the way I structure my approach to defining and creating an effective social marketing campaign. So, I’m hopeful that this will be helpful to a lot of people.

I’ve also realized from the comments I’ve received so far that I’ve dated myself in the report with a Tom Cruise and Cocktail movie reference… yeah, I guess I’m getting closer to “old fart” than I’d like to be, but then again I never feel old, just refined.

I imagine that things will continue evolving and changing with the social web over time, doesn’t everything online? So I also setup a mailing list for the report so that as things change or new ideas come along I can update everyone. That’s also completely free and like my blog mailing list has a SPAM-FREE policy limiting it to no more than 1 monthly mailing ever.

I really hate getting 3 sentence emails every day from dozens of the mailing lists I belong to. They really waste a lot of my time and leave me feeling a little abused. I prefer lists where the authors wait until they have plenty of information to share before interrupting my daily activities, so I operate my own lists that way.

I just think blogs are the place for that daily “this and that” stuff, and mailing lists are better suited to larger collections of information.

Anyway, so that’s the deal with the Niche Frenzy mailing list. It’s a way for me to add to or append the information in the report over time and to continue sharing my thoughts and strategies on social marketing with you.

I hope you’ll grab the report, I think it’ll be helpful and I’ll be posting more “this and that” here later. You can download the report at www.nichefrenzy.com.
