I was asked to review the web site of the Video Conversion Experts at www.videoconversionexperts.com

I don’t accept many review requests, but whenever I do review a site I always start with looking at the layout and navigation systems, and then move on to the content. In this case the layout was fitting to the business and their navigation system is adequate for users to easily find information so there’s not really much to say from a web-tech perspective. I don’t critique design, only functionality, and this site is setup perfectly for a good user experience. So, on to the content.

First let me explain what their service is. Basically they convert film to DVD for you. Since film tends to degrade and break down in a rather short period of time, getting your old home movie film to DVD is a cost effective way of saving those memories forever. So, they certainly provide a usable service for customers.

I’ve seen this type of service being offered by companies for a while now. And I’ve seen the results from it with several companies but was never overly impressed. The transfer process always seemed to cause the digital replication to be a little blurred, and if you start with old film that’s already showing signs of age this can lead to a very poor final result.

When I checked out the Video Conversion Experts site the first thing I noticed was that they use a different process for transferring film to DVD then most others do. In most cases the company does a real time transfer, which is basically a play and record setup that can require multiple transfers taking place. For example, your old 8mm film might first be converted to VHS, and then the VHS version gets sent through a PC graphic card to be recorded as a live stream feed into a digital format. The result of this type of transfer is typically a loss of resolution and noticeable color fading.

But the Video Conversion Experts are using software and hardware for a “frame by frame” transfer process. I’m certainly not an expert on digital media, but from what I read about their process on the site and my limited knowledge of digital video it sounds to me like these folks are probably getting superior results with their methods.

Just looking at it as a programmer I’m able to see the benefits to converting at frame by frame over real time streaming. If you break a video down to each individual frame you’ve got the ability to edit, retouch, fine tune and restore anything and everything in perfect detail.

And looking through the examples on their site I can honestly say they’re getting better results than those I’ve seen in the past.

All in all I’d say if you’ve been thinking about transferring your old VHS or 8mm film to video DVD checkout the Video Conversion Experts web site. Compare them with other similar companies. I did for this review and am convinced the Video Conversion Experts seem to have the best offering out there based on quality and pricing.
