I Finally Got The New Theme Finished

I’ve been working on this theme (on and off again) for what feels like forever now. I even posted about it way back in November of last year. And today, after lots of work and quite a few compromises from what I originally envisioned–I finally have the new theme functional enough to put live on this blog.
As far as design is concerned I’m pretty happy with it. I was able to include my family crest in the header, along with a fun little Leprechaun ready to share his Pot-O-Gold that’s somewhat representative of the idea behind this blog.
I was even able to get a neat little shadowing effect with the family crest that I really like, though I had originally wanted to redraw the crest in a very “Web 2.0″ style. Something that looked like glossy glass was what I had in mind; but graphic arts has never been my strong point and after hours of fighting with Photoshop I surrendered and compromised for the shadowing effects on the original crest instead.
I was also able to get everything I wanted accomplished with the sidebars finally. I’m a fairly competent programmer but the way in which WordPress handles multiple dynamic sidebars was really rough for me to wrap my head around.
I did lose a single widget because one of my plugins won’t seem to work with the new theme. I’m going to play with that more later, but it wasn’t anything major so I’m not upset by that at all.
Just like before I’m unhappy with the Spicypages widget because it loads so darn slow that it drags the whole site down to a crawl at times.
I’ve had the widget on and off of my blog numerous times in the past and will probably remove it again if they [Spicypages] can’t get things moving faster soon.
I took a lot of help from Bob using his free themes as examples over at www.blogohblog.com so I wanted to make sure to mention that here. I’ve also kept a footer link for Bob as well in appreciation. If you’re doing any work on a WP theme I’d recommend checking out that site and the offerings there for good ways to accomplish a lot of different things with your layout.
Let me know what you think about the new look.

Scott, it looks great. How’d you find a leprechaun that looks just like you? LOL
