Adam left me a comment in this posting from the other day where I had offered my readers a few niche domains that I had sitting around underused.

Basically, Adam was pointing out that when selling domains there are a lot of places like GoDaddy’s after market and SEDO where you can often get better prices for your domains.

What’s funny is I saw Adam’s comment just moments after checking in on my account at another site where I publish for syndication and being absolutely amazed by the stats of my writings as well as the number of people who’ve subscribed to my Author’s email list from there–so I was already feeling a bit humbled and after reading Adam’s helpful comments I thought it was a great opportunity to talk about why I don’t base every decision on the bottom line.

I am aware of those domain markets, as well as numerous webmaster forums where I could have easily made more money if I had listed the domains on them, but I really wanted to offer them cheap to my readers.

I think it’s easy as a blogger to take for granted just exactly what readers are giving us sometimes. The very idea that people take time out of their day, time they could spend working, playing or being with their loved ones, just to read what I might have to say about anything… that just blows my mind!

The web, blogs and social communities online make us so connected with others, but because we’re all connected from isolated points at our own PC’s and other devices it also creates a sort of feeling of disconnect with the very people we’re engaging.

For me, like I said, just knowing that I have this ability to interact with literally tens of thousands of people, and knowing that even some of them might care enough about what I have to say to subscribe to my RSS feeds or email lists–well, that’s incredibly sobering for me.

But it isn’t something that I’m just thinking about for the first time, I’ve always been in awe of the scope and reach that every person can have online, and I’m always aware of–and thankful for–the precious gift of time people reading my postings are giving to me.

So any chance I get to throw something of benefit beyond just my thoughts out there for folks–I’m more than happy to do so.

I’m not into astrology nor really superstitious, but I believe in Karma. I believe that you get what you give and deserve.

I believe that if you’re good and honest with people you’ll be rewarded for it ten times over.

I believe that by helping someone else we ultimately help ourselves.

I live my private life with those beliefs, and I apply them in my business as well.

So sure, I could have sold those domains on another venue and made more money from the deal, but as I’ve said many times on this blog, it can’t always be about the money. If it was I wouldn’t like myself very much and would probably go insane.
