If you’ve got some basic developing skills and are a fan of WordPress here’s a great idea for a FireFox extension that I think would be popular–and I know would be useful to bloggers.
Yahoo! is rolling out it’s Glue application in the U.S. right now, which allows you to create a massive mashup page on a topic. Here’s an example of a Glue page for “government”:
That’s a great resource to have on hand if I were writing a blog post about the government, or as a regular blogger on a political blog.
So I’m thinking that it would be great to have a browser extension add-on that would integrate with the WordPress post writing page (and maybe other blogging platforms too I suppose) so that while I was writing a blog post if I wanted to call up a Glue page on the topic for content research I could do it without having to leave the writing/editing page of my blog.
Browser extensions like Zemanta and Kaalga already integrate with blog platforms like this, they just perform a different function from displaying a Glue page, so I’m sure it could be done.
I can really see this being useful and popular with bloggers, so it would be a great way to generate a little buzz for yourself as a developer or free promotion for your web site once you make it available.
So come on, I know there are developers who frequent my blog now and then, take my idea and make it happen!

Seems like it would be much easier to just use the Yahoo API to put a box in your Wordpress site admin area. It could use AJAX to grab whatever Glue pages you were interested in.
I just learned about these Glue pages, I wonder how popular they will be.
Cheers!

Kyle, I have to admit that despite lots of programming work I’ve never spent much time with the Yahoo! API so never even thought of going that route.
If it would work then I’d agree it might be easier than a browser extension.
However, that would limit the platforms it could be used on then to self-hosted blogs or CMS systems.
With a browser extension this could be used by any blogger or site owner and on any platform.
For quick research Glue looks pretty cool. I’m not sure what kind of reach or popularity it’ll get beyond that though. But I can see bloggers who need constant content ideas or research assistance getting a lot of use from it.

Good points you bring up. I only think in Wordpress, sorry, so I always tend to neglect the other blog platforms. Plus I am a little lazy and always want to do it the easiest way possible.
Nice blog by the way. Take care.

Kyle, thanks for the comments. I’ve done the same in the past with plugin ideas myself as a WordPress fan, but several other bloggers I work with are always quick to remind me I’m making them feel “left out”… so I’ve gotten more used to thinking in terms of platform independent widgets over WP plugins.

Great idea, I am looking forward to seeing the working plugin.
